NAPLES ARTCRAFTERS STANDARDS The Naples Artcrafters Standards Committee was established in 1975 to ensure that the work exhibited and sold at our shows is of high quality. The committee is comprised of qualified members with many years of experience, who will bring to the process specific knowledge regarding the arts and crafts. To enable unbiased judgments, the work being evaluated has no name attached. There are seven regular and four alternate members appointed by the President. The chair may, when necessary, call in an expert, in an area not represented on the committee, for expert advice. That advisor may not vote but simply provide opinion. To maintain high quality, the Standards Committee looks for the following:
CONCEPT: The work must be conceived and executed by the artist/crafter.
DESIGN: The work must show knowledge of good design principles.
PRESENTATION: A high quality of presentation and a finished look are expected. Work presented should be in “exhibit” condition. All two-dimensional artwork must be framed or gallery-wrapped (having the media continue around the top, bottom and sides of the stretched canvas). China painting is acceptable if it is hand painted and uses no decals. Tole painting, if original using no stenciled design, is also acceptable. Molded objects are allowed only when the molds are the original designs of the artist. The molds are to be presented to the committee, along with the work to be juried. Quality painting on material and objects other than the usual canvas, paper, masonite or canvas board, may be considered at the discretion of the committee. Beaded jewelry may be considered at the discretion of the committee (see Revision to Standards). Art assemblages of found objects will be considered at the discretion of the Standards Committee.

For evaluation, contact the Standards Chairperson, Rinny Ryan 352-7687, to arrange to bring your work before the committee. The applicant submits three (3) finished pieces of work for consideration. If you work in more than one category, for example - watercolor and sculpture, you must bring three pieces of each category that is to be evaluated. The Standards Committee juries submitted work every last Monday of the month from September through April, excluding December. It is important to strictly adhere to the appointment time. Submitters are to deliver the work and leave, returning as directed to pick up the work. If this procedure is inconvenient, another party may deliver and pick up the work. Applicants will be notified within one (1) week prior to standards process. Only art and crafts that have been approved by this Committee may be exhibited and sold at Artcrafter shows. A change of craft or a change of media requires submission for approval. There is a jury fee of $10.00 for non-members per category. The jury fee is not applicable to the membership dues. During show hours, members may expect visits from designated persons who are assuring the work exhibited is consistent with that which was accepted by the Standards Committee. Constructive advise may also be offered. If unacceptable work is displayed, removal of such items will be required. No commercial displays or dealers are allowed in the shows.

REVISION TO STANDARDS
Only beadwork that goes beyond the elements of counting and stringing will be considered on the basis of:

CONCEPT:
Work must be designed and executed by the artist/craftsperson.

DESIGN:

  • To plan and fashion artistically the form and structure of an object, work of art or decorative scheme.
  • The organization or structure of formal elements of art or craft; composition, balance, color, texture.
  • Expertise of workmanship and knowledge of technique

ORIGINALITY:

  • Use of the ability to think and express oneself independently and individually.   A freshness or novelty, as of an idea or method.
  • Use of color and texture in an original and creative manner.
  • The inclusion of handmade components is greatly encouraged.

PRESENTATION:

  • The manner in which work is shown or laid out for other people to see.   A high quality of craftsmanship and a finished look is expected.   (e.g. two dimensional work must be framed or gallery wrapped)

Applicant, please be aware, because of the increased amount of applicants for beadwork, Naples Artcrafters Standards Committee will be exceptionally meticulous in its examination during the jury process.
